Did you know that there are several types of Curriculum Vitae? When adapted to the right job, each of those can drastically improve your application, help you highlight your abilities and increase your chances in obtaining a job.
Further, we will guide you through three different types of CV’s, when and how to use them correctly.
The Chronological CV
This is the most common and traditional type of CV. It contains a list of your work experience and education in reverse chronological order - starting with the most recent experience.
The Chronological CV can help you highlight previous jobs and experience, which can be ideal if you want your next job to be within the same industry as your former jobs. This type of CV makes it easier for recruiters to quickly scan your CV, which is often what they expect at first glance.
This type of CV is not recommended if you have held several short-term jobs (especially if they have been in different industries). Avoid creating a chaotic application that doesn’t highlight your strengths.
Furthermore, recent graduates and people with little to no work experience should appeal to different types of CV structures. The chronological CV sorts your data by date and thus, the lack of consistent work in the same industry and/or experience will easily stand out and bring your changes down.
The Functional CV
In contrast to the chronological CV, the functional CV highlights your career achievements. These could be everything from increasing the yearly revenue in a shop, boosting the SEO on a website or streamlining the production in a company you worked for.
It is a great format to highlight where your primary skills are located, which can fasten a recruiter’s decision to pick YOU as the best candidate for the job. Especially if you lack quantitative experience.
Please note, this CV style can limit the diversity of your experience listed, if you have been loyal to the same employer working with the same tasks for a long time. Nevertheless, use this to your advantage and point out your perfected abilities.
The Creative CV
Are you looking for a job within the areas of marketing, design, media, graphic design or something similar? A creative CV might be worth considering, as you will have the chance to showcase your skills and make a personal impact on the employer.
Keep it professional but with a twist. With the creative CV, you can highlight yourself from the crowd of applicants and use this as an opportunity to show your style. Adapt to the company’s DNA & style, use its colors and significant elements to instantly prove your understanding of where their image stands.
The Academic CV
A great format for those that are actively looking for a high-up job - researcher, post-graduation or lecturer. This type of CV should contain information that refers mainly to the academic fields you are applying for. This could be teaching or researching experience, awards, licenses or publications of books or scientific reports.

No matter what type of CV you choose to forward your application, keep an accurate and professional look. It is also recommended to keep your CV at a maximum of 2 pages - this doesn't apply to the creative or academic CV, where the length isn’t as important as the content.
If you’re having a hard time picking the right CV for your next application, don’t be afraid to mix it up. It’s often to see a combination of several different structures, the most common one being between the chronological and functional CV.
Tailor your CV for each job offer. This doesn’t mean you have to make the CV from scratch every time - make small adjustments, point the most relevant skills and achieved results.
